Monthly Writing Contests
SFWA encourages members with a current
membership to enter the monthly writing contests.
We are pleased and excited to announce that we have a new Contest Director: Niurka Castaneda.
Niurka Castaneda is a U.S. Army veteran, filmmaker, and entrepreneur. She is the founder of AMOR Umbrella, a mission-driven media company
dedicated to storytelling that restores hope—particularly within the veteran and underserved communities. Niurka also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Umbrella Splash Magazine and hosts the Umbrellas of Hope TV show. As contest director, she’s looking for stories with heart, originality, and emotional resonance—stories that leave the reader with something to hold onto long after the final line.
Winners will be announced at the monthly meetings and will receive a certificate.
First place winners of each contest category genre will be invited to a live read at the following month's meeting.
One Grand Prize winner from the live reading will be voted upon by SFWA members in attendance at the hybrid meeting for a gift card.
First place winners can also claim reimbursement from SFWA for up to $25 towards entering that winning entry in a national contest of the author’s choosing but must make this claim within 60 days of winning. For this reason, we publish only the titles and the winners’ names, but not the winning entries themselves, in the Author’s Voice, to preserve a work’s “unpublished” status and allow the member to submit it elsewhere for publication.

Prompt/Theme for June:
“Light in Motion”
Submission Deadline: Saturday, July 4th
June celebrates the energy and warmth of summer — moments of
joy, connection, and transformation. Writers can explore the
magic in movement, change, and fleeting experiences.
Prompt ideas to spark creativity:
• A summer that felt like it would last forever.
• The way sunlight, shadows, or movement revealed a hidden truth.
• A fleeting encounter that left a lasting mark.
• A story where warmth
Length limit: 1,200 words max
Deadline for submissions is the Saturday prior to next SFWA meeting
Submit PDF/DOC format attachment only.
Submissions will be blindly judged,
do not include name/attribution on attachment.
Updated Contest Guidelines 6/2026
Submission Deadline: The deadline is the Saturday before the next meeting. This allows time for coordination, certificate preparation, and meeting planning.
Late Submissions: No entries will be accepted after the deadline.
Point of Contact / Submission Process:
To ensure blind judging, all entries must be submitted directly to Giancarlo Diago Cevallo at giancarlodc@proton.me (please do not send submissions to the Contest Director).
Submission Format: Entries must be submitted as a PDF or DOC attachment only.
Blind Judging: Submissions are judged blindly. Please do not include your name or any identifying information within the document.
Categories & Submissions: While we maintain three primary contest categories, submissions are open to all forms of writing—fiction and non-fiction. If a piece does not
clearly fit within the main categories, members are encouraged to contact us for consideration.
Opportunities for Participants:
• The top winners, across each category genre, will have the opportunity to read their work at
the monthly meeting.
• Members present will vote for the best entry.
• The winning selection will receive a $20 gift card.
Important: First place winners of each genre category must be present (either physically or virtually) at the meeting to participate in the final voting and gift card selection. Additionally, first place winners may request reimbursement of up to $25 from SFWA toward submitting their piece to a national contest (must be claimed within 60 days). To preserve eligibility for external publication, only the titles and winners’ names will be published in the Author’s Voice, not the full entries.
